Ryan Reynolds is working on a boy band movie, and wants Hugh Jackman to join him
Thanks to a pretty extensive press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine, we know that Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have solid chemistry. Reynolds seems to agree with that assessment, and even suggested that he wants to get Jackman involved in one of his upcoming projects.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds explained that he wants to make Boy Band, a movie about an aging boy band, and he’d like Jackman to co-star. “I really want to make Boy Band, and I’m still trying to figure out the smartest way to put that together,” he explained.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Jackman is in talks to star in the project, and Reynolds added that he’d like to keep the budget relatively modest. “Shawn, Hugh and I are open to creative ways to make this movie at an absolute bargain,” he said. Shawn Levy, who directed Deadpool & Wolverine, is attached to produce the movie alongside Reynolds, who will also star and write the project.
“A lot of members of boy bands — and there are a lot of them — had managers who left them high and dry,” Reynolds said, explaining why the movie appeals to him. “They experienced levels of fame that would be very difficult for anyone to navigate, let alone an adolescent, when you are farming out your self-worth to an audience of screaming people. It creates a kind of arrested cultural development. They’re forever associated with that period of time in their lives.”
“This would be about people in their 40s and 50s trying to get their lives back,” he added. “I think there is something beautiful about that. The north star for me as a producer is joy. I feel like cynicism is a contracting industry, and doesn’t have a great shelf life.”
